New DNC Chair Tom Perez is a Victory for Interns

Washington, D.C.- Tom Perez’s selection as the new DNC Chair signifies a great opportunity for interns across the country as Chairman Perez and his Deputy Chair Keith Ellison, both committed to work on implementing a paid internship program at the DNC if elected.

The new leadership could have profound implications for interns across the congressional landscape. A paid internship program at the DNC will set the standard for the democratic party as a whole. “During the election, Chairman Perez was the first candidate to add paid internships as part of his platform. We are certain that Chairman Perez will excel in this role given his extensive background in labor and civil rights,” Carlos Vera, Founder of Pay Our Interns, said.

Throughout the election Pay Our Interns reached out to all DNC candidates on their thoughts of the current unpaid internship program at the DNC and how it excludes prospective applicants. Both Tom Perez and Keith Ellison endorsed our campaigns and promised to make paid internships a reality established at the DNC. “We look forward to working with the DNC in creating a paid internship program, which recognizes the modern financial challenges that many millennials face” Vera added.

This announcement marks the beginning of a steadfast commitment to ensure that historically marginalized communities are not excluded from opportunities because of their socio-economic status. Pay Our Interns looks forward to working with the DNC in ensuring their internship opportunities are equitable for all.

Washington, DC- "Pay Our Interns is excited to hear that the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama has created an internship program. However, we are disappointed to hear that it's a full-time unpaid commitment. The average internship can cost upward of $6,200, making a full-time internship in D.C. out-of-reach to many talented college students from across the country,” said Carlos Vera, Founder of Pay Our Interns.

Just two months ago President Obama said that his post-presidency plans included fostering the next generation of democratic leaders. "Every young person deserves to have opportunity and access when it comes to internships, and unpaid internships exclude students who do not have the means to work without adequate compensation. We look forward to working with the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama to ensure this happens.”
